“Youkali”

The pursuit of Happiness

Time

About

Inspired by Weill’s mournful and politically-charged tango which seeks for deliverance from a spiritually exhausted post-World-War Europe in ‘the land of our desires’ – ‘Youkali’ –, this show creates an atmosphere of nostalgia, sensuality and longing with its arrangement of poetry and prose by Charles Baudelaire, Nikos Gatsos, Anais Nin and Fernando Pessoa, alongside well-known songs like ‘La Vie en Rose’, ‘Que Sera Sera’, ‘Try to Remember’ and ‘Happiness Runs’ or films like A Boy on a Dolphin and Michael Powell’s Honeymoon, which explore the meanings of happiness in different contexts and times.

As the avant-garde merges with popular culture into a seamless flow, History evaporates and the stage itself becomes ‘Youkali’ — a dreamland that reminds us, against the backdrop of the accordion, of the fragility of each and everyone’s pursuit of happiness, including our own.

The performance is a medley of Greek, English, French and Italian songs and melodies.

Concept & Direction: Angeliki Petropetsioti

Lyrics arranged by: Elena Hadjiafxendi & Chryso Charalambous
